"Amsterdam School Architecture: Art, Craft and Expression"

The Birth of the Amsterdam School: The Amsterdam School emerged in the first decades of the 20th century as a reaction to the clean lines of the prevailing Art Deco style and the influence of the industrial revolution. Architects, artists and craftsmen felt the need to embrace a more organic and artisanal approach to architecture. The movement flourished between 1910 and 1930.

Characteristics of Amsterdam School Architecture:

1. Expressive Masonry: A notable feature of the Amsterdam School is the use of expressive brickwork. Brick facades are often decorated with geometric patterns, sculptures and intricate reliefs, resulting in lively and exuberant buildings.

2. Wavy Lines and Organic Shapes: In contrast to the rigid geometry of Art Deco, the Amsterdam School embraced organic forms and undulating lines. This gave the architecture an almost fairytale feel.

3. Craft Details: The Amsterdam School valued craftsmanship and handmade details. Ironwork, wood carvings and stained-glass windows were often used to add unique and personal touches to the buildings.

4. Total artwork: Architects of the Amsterdam School aimed for a 'total work of art' in which architecture, interior design, furniture and decorative arts blended harmoniously.

Iconic Buildings of the Amsterdam School:

The Shipping House: Designed by Johan van der Mey, this monumental building is a pioneering work of the Amsterdam School and marks the transition from traditional to expressionist architecture.

Het Schip Museum: Built as social housing, Het Schip is a prime example of Amsterdam School architecture. The striking complex is now a museum highlighting the history of the movement and the social housing experiment.

De Dageraad / The Dawn: This residential complex, designed by Michel de Klerk, is a masterpiece of the Amsterdam School and displays the distinctive style with wavy lines and expressive brickwork.
